Bay Area Catholics Celebrate Historic Appointment of Pope Leo XIV, First American-Born Pontiff

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A wave of excitement swept across the Bay Area on Thursday as local Catholics joined believers worldwide in celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV — the first American-born pope in history.

The announcement was particularly meaningful for residents who share cultural ties with the new pope. Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV has become a symbol of hope and representation for many.

“My initial reaction as a native Chicagoan was, ‘What?’ Then I thought, ‘Oh my God,’ and I started crying,” said Bob Rucker of Half Moon Bay. “I’ve been a Catholic since 1959 and was always told this could never happen. This is one of the most historic moments of my life.”

Though originally from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV also holds Peruvian citizenship. He spent years in Peru serving as a missionary and later rose to become an archbishop — deepening his connection with the Peruvian people.

At Estampas Peruanas, a Peruvian restaurant in Redwood City, the mood was joyous. Bay Area Peruvians expressed pride and hope for the future of the Catholic Church.

“I feel deeply emotional knowing that our new pope has roots in Peru,” said Guillermo Altuna. “It’s a proud moment for our country.”

Locals shared their aspirations for Pope Leo XIV’s papacy.

“I hope he brings compassion and support to immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community,” said Rosa Los Santos.

“I want to see a continuation of the social justice work that Pope Francis championed,” added Rucker.

San Jose Bishop Oscar Cantú offered insight into the significance of the new pope’s chosen name.

“By selecting the name Pope Leo XIV, he may be signaling a renewed focus on the church’s role in addressing social issues,” said Bishop Cantú. “Which issues he will prioritize remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an encouraging sign.”

As Catholics in the Bay Area and beyond look ahead, there is a strong sense of optimism. For now, the prevailing emotion is joy as a new chapter in the history of the Catholic Church begins.
